IS 2062 E450 Steel Plates: Specifications & Applications for Heavy-Duty Structures

Convergence Steel Technical TeamAugust 31, 20267 min read

IS 2062 E450 represents the top of the conventional structural steel range under the Indian Standard IS 2062, delivering a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa for projects where E250 and E350 fall short. This guide covers its specification, sub-grades, and the demanding applications it serves.

What is IS 2062 E450?

IS 2062 E450 is a hot-rolled structural steel plate carrying a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa (Fe 570). It bridges the gap between conventional structural steel and quenched-and-tempered high-strength grades, offering elevated strength while remaining economical and readily weldable — making it a preferred choice for heavy bridges, industrial structures, and large machinery bases.

Sub-Grades: E450A, E450BR, and E450C

E450 is available in three sub-qualities. E450A is supplied as-rolled with no impact testing requirement. E450BR offers notch toughness assurance for general structural use. E450C is impact tested at 0°C or -20°C, making it suitable for structures exposed to lower ambient temperatures or higher dynamic loads, such as transmission towers and crane gantries.

Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties

Carbon is capped at 0.23%, manganese at 1.65%, with phosphorus and sulphur controlled below 0.045%. Mechanically, E450 guarantees a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa, tensile strength of 570–720 MPa, and elongation of 17% minimum, with Charpy impact toughness of 27 J at 27°C for the C grade.

Weldability & Fabrication

Despite its elevated strength, E450 maintains good weldability due to its controlled carbon equivalent. Standard SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW processes all apply. For sections above 40mm, preheating to 100–150°C is recommended to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking. The plate can be cold-formed, sheared, drilled, and flame-cut using standard workshop practices.

Applications & Grade Equivalents

E450 is specified for heavy bridges and flyovers, industrial building structures, heavy machinery and press frames, transmission towers, port and jetty structures, shipbuilding, crane booms, and railway rolling stock frames. Internationally, it corresponds broadly to EN 10025-2 S450J0/J2, ASTM A572 Grade 65, and BS 4360 Grade 55.

Conclusion

IS 2062 E450 delivers the strength headroom that heavy structural and infrastructure projects demand, while remaining economical and fabrication-friendly compared to quenched-and-tempered grades. Convergence Steel stocks E450 from 5mm to 150mm thickness with full BIS-compliant mill certification.
